What Are Medicare Election Periods?
August 10, 2026 | Maria Alvarado-Espinoza
Confused by Medicare enrollment periods? You're not alone. With multiple enrollment windows and different rules depending on your situation, it's easy to miss an important deadline.
Whether you’re new to Medicare or have been enrolled for years, figuring out when you’re able to enroll or make changes to your plan can be challenging. It’s important to understand the specific timeframes for when you can first enroll in Medicare to ensure you do not have a lapse in coverage. You'll also want to be familiar with the times each year when you can make changes to your Medicare coverage.
There may be additional opportunities to enroll or make changes during other periods, depending on your specific plan or reason for enrolling. These are all known as Medicare Election Periods or Medicare Enrollment Periods.
Below, we have a breakdown of all the major Medicare election periods so you can be prepared and know your options.
Medicare Enrollment Periods to Know
Annual Election Period (AEP)
During the Annual Election Period, or AEP, Medicare recipients have the option to change their health and prescription drug plans for the coming year. This is when Medicare recipients can find plans that better meet their needs, allow them to use different providers or pharmacies, lower costs, or more. The AEP runs from October 15 to December 7 every year.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) & Initial Coverage Election Period (ICEP)
When you first become eligible for Medicare, there is an Initial Enrollment Period, or IEP, that spans seven months. It begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, the month of your birthday and 3 months after. During this time, you can sign up for Medicare Parts A, B and D. The Initial Coverage Election Period, or ICEP, runs for the same window of time, but applies for Medicare Part C only. If you plan to work past 65, you will enroll during a Special Enrollment Period (see below).

General Enrollment Period
The general enrollment period runs each year from January 1 to March 31 and is for individuals who missed signing up for Medicare Part B when they were first eligible. When you apply during this timeframe, your Medicare coverage will start on the first day of the month after you enroll. Note that late enrollment penalties may apply.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP)
During this enrollment period, which runs from January 1 to March 31, those on Medicare Advantage (MA) plans have the option to enroll into a different plan, or disenroll from MA and sign up for Medicare, with or without Part D.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
During a Special Enrollment Period, or SEP, you’re eligible to make changes to your Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans. Certain life events trigger this eligibility, such as leaving employer coverage, changing where you live, or experiencing a change in Extra Help status.

Don't Miss Your Medicare Enrollment Window
Knowing when you can enroll in Medicare is just as important as understanding how Medicare works. Missing an enrollment deadline could result in delayed coverage or even late enrollment penalties, while enrolling during the right enrollment period helps ensure you have the coverage you need when you need it. Whether you're approaching age 65, retiring, moving, or experiencing another qualifying life event, understanding Medicare's enrollment periods can help you avoid costly missteps and make confident coverage decisions.
