Does Medicare Cover Transportation Services?
November 3, 2025 | Todd Lewison
For many older adults, getting to appointments or running errands can be stressful without reliable transportation. Using public transit isn’t always convenient or even accessible, and relying on friends or family for rides isn’t always possible. Ride-share services can help, but they’re often costly and not the easiest solution for those who need extra assistance or have technology limitations.
As a senior or an individual on Medicare, you may need assistance getting to medical appointments. In fact, reliable transportation can be just as important as the treatment itself. If you are unable to drive and do not have someone to take you, it may prevent you from attending important appointments. So, can Medicare help with this? The answer is: maybe. Learn more about what Medicare does and doesn't cover regarding transportation to appointments.
What Are Transportation Services?
There are two main types of transportation services: emergency transportation and non-emergency transportation.
Emergency transportation generally refers to ambulance services during life-threatening situations, while non-emergency transportation includes rides for routine medical visits, therapy appointments, or other health-related needs. Understanding the difference here is important since Medicare coverage varies depending on the type of transportation.
What Types of Transportation are Covered By Medicare?
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) covers transportation only in certain situations, but generally, it doesn’t cover the costs when it’s a routine trip from home to your doctor.
Part A may cover emergency transportation services, and in some situations, Part B may cover transportation if it’s deemed medically necessary.
Original Medicare does cover emergency ambulance services when your health is in serious danger and immediate transportation is required. In limited cases, it may also cover non-emergency ambulance transportation if it is medically necessary and a doctor certifies that no other safe option is available.

What Transportation Services Are NOT Covered By Medicare?
In most cases, non-emergency transportation is not covered by Original Medicare Parts A and B. This means that routine rides to doctor’s appointments, pharmacies, or health-related activities are generally your responsibility at your own expense.
Transportation Services Covered by Medicare Advantage Plans
Medicare Advantage plans are Medicare-approved health plans offered by private insurance companies. They provide the same coverage as Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) while often including additional benefits and financial protection through an annual maximum out-of-pocket limit.
Many Medicare Advantage plans offer extra benefits such as dental, hearing, vision, prescription drug coverage and more. Depending on the plan and your location, these may include transportation to medically necessary appointments, wellness programs, and in some cases, support for health-related or non-medical needs such as grocery delivery or fitness memberships – though it is not commonly covered. Because benefits can vary widely between plans, it’s important to review your options carefully to find one that best fits your healthcare needs and lifestyle.
Other Options for Transportation Support
Not all Medicare Advantage plans provide transportation services, and it’s important to remember that these plans are under annual contracts, meaning benefits can change from year to year. This is one of many reasons why an annual review is advisable.
If your Medicare plan does not offer transportation benefits, there may be some other options available. Many communities have senior-friendly transportation services often referred to as Senior Transportation Programs (STPs).
To find out if there is a transportation program for seniors in your community, contact your local city or county government offices.
